Herbology – Gardening
When attending Herbology sessions, your child will learn about:
Prep: Seasons
Students will investigate the seasons of the year and the order they follow. They will link them to the months of the year and understand how different hemispheres on Earth have opposing seasons. They will describe the features of each season, their duration, and link this knowledge to our gardens and growing conditions. At the end of the unit, students will be able to simply describe why some fruits and vegetables thrive during different seasons.
Grade 1/2: Composting and Mini-Beasts
Students will explore the concept of composting and discover the tiny creatures – mini beasts – that help break down food scraps into rich soil. Through observation, sorting activities and collaborative projects, students will learn how composting works, why it’s important and how living things (including worms and bugs) help the earth.
Grade 3/4: Farm Animals and Symbiosis
Students will explore the types, roles, and needs of common Australian farm animals and investigate various symbiotic relationships (mutualism, commensalism, parasitism) among animals. Through hands-on investigations, group discussions and creative projects, students will develop an understanding of interdependence in living systems, animal welfare, and the role of farms in food production.
Grade 5/6: Propagation
Students will explore the fundamental concepts of propagating from seeds, cuttings, stems and succulents. Students will understand how they can use these skills to contribute towards their community and create items of value. They will devise plans to generate income streams (eggs, veggie sales, indoor plants, seedlings, succulents) to coincide with spring. Students will understand that what is valued by propagating plants (for food, beauty, happiness, gifts, achievement, sale, etc) is different for everybody.
